Build a finish-safe wheel-cleaning kit

Keep wheel tools away from your paint-wash supplies. Brake dust contains hard particles that can scratch body panels after a mitt or towel moves from the wheel bucket to the car.

  • Cleaner: pH-neutral car-wash soap or a wheel cleaner whose label approves your exact finish.
  • Wash tools: a dedicated bucket, clean microfiber mitt, soft face brush, small detail brush, and a flexible barrel brush with no exposed metal.
  • Rinse and dry tools: a free-flowing hose or controlled pressure washer, plus clean microfiber drying towels or filtered air.
  • Protection: an optional sealant or coating that its maker approves for your wheel finish.

How to clean forged wheels step by step

1. Let the wheel and brakes cool
